Backup Power Source for AUTOParkit, AUTODockit, and AUTOStorit Systems

Developers exploring an AUTOParkit System by Dasher Lawless, a leader in fully automated parking, inquire early on about an electric backup solution.

Three primary solutions are currently employed, and now, with the cost of utility-scale batteries significantly dropping, a new alternative solution has emerged. And with this comes additional revenue opportunities for CRE Developers.

BESS prices in US market to fall a further 18% in 2024, says CEA

To recap on existing Secondary POWER Source solutions for AUTOParkit, AUTODockit, and AUTOStorit systems, Dasher Lawless would recommend at least one of the following to be adopted:

  1. At a minimum, include a Generator Port in the switchgear to allow a portable generator to be connected. Helms Bakery.
  2. Install an on-site generator connected to the switchgear with an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS). The on-site generator is powered by another power source (e.g., natural gas or diesel). INclave.
  3. Provide multiple circuits supplied by the same or different electric utility companies. PRESS/321 Building.

A fourth option would be a BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) that allows for the battery to be charged from a renewable energy source (e.g., solar or wind), an on-site generator, or low-demand periods from an electric utility company. There are cases when an electric utility company will give the energy away.

A BESS, when paired with an AUTOParkit System, is used to allow the System to run in a low-power mode or retrieve-only mode until the primary power source is restored. Another alternative with a secondary power source is to provide power for charging EVs. This allows the Developer to increase margins on the sale of electricity since energy is purchased at a rate lower than normal. What is also converging is a virtual BESS, which a utility company can locate battery containers in different sites but virtually link them to act as a single larger BESS to provide backup to a garage and also discharge to the Electrical Grid, providing the Developer another revenue stream.

An AUTOParkit System is categorized as a continuous automation application, but unlike its counterparts has a relatively low duty cycle (10% or less per day). Capitalizing on these two characteristics creates an ideal fit for BESS technology to integrate as a secondary power source.
